Read this before buying Flea and Tick products for your Pet

herbal_dog_careWhen you pet get tick or fleas both you and your pet want to get rid of them as soon as possible. The first thing we do is to get a flea and tick removal product from a pet shop or order it online retail; but are you aware of the ingredients that conventionally produced flea and tick contains?

According to the Washington-based Center for Public Integrity (CPI), a non-profit investigative news organization, and the National Resources Defence Council, an environmental advocacy group, have identified harmful chemicals that are likely to be found in Flea & Tick products are organophosphate insecticides (OPs) and fipronil. (Source: https://www.publicintegrity.org/environment/health-and-safety/perils-new-pesticides)

The common type of organophosphate insecticide (OP) that are found in flea and tick products is tetrachlorvinphos and it is been classified by the EPA as cancer-causing to humans and animals.

Fipronil is a broad-use insecticide that belongs to the phenylpyrazole chemical family. Fipronil is a broad-spectrum insecticide that disrupts the insect central nervous system by blocking GABA-gated chloride channels and glutamate-gated chloride (GluCl) channels, resulting in central nervous system toxicity. According veterinary studies it is found that that the active ingredient (fipronil) in Frontine remains in a pet’s system with the potential for nervous system and thyroid toxicity. Tests on laboratory animals resulted in thyroid cancer and altered thyroid hormones, liver and kidney toxicity, reduced fertility and convulsions.   (Source: http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-dangers-of-flea-and-tick-products/)

Aids digestion

Oolong can help aid digestion for those not sensitive to caffeine. The tea alkalizes the digestive tract, reducing inflammation in those with acid reflux and ulcer problems. Because it is mildly antiseptic, oolong tea can clear bad bacteria from your belly. It’s calm, smooth flavor can soothe the stomach when consumed hot.

The Price You Pay for the “Clean” White Sanitary Napkins and for its Odor Neutralizers?

cheme

Those were the days when mom’s and granny’s used to use the clean and old clothes during their periods. Since the pads were not commercial they also got a chance to be bit slow so they can tune into their body condition. With the commercialization and different innovations to help women stay at their normal pace, many products have been introduced. To sell their products the companies need to sell and show a product that is white. To make cotton or the other raw material white, several chemicals and bleaches are used including dioxins.

According to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Dioxins is one of the most toxic chemicals known to science and it is linked to many life shortening diseases like pelvic inflammatory, ovarian cancer, immune system damage, hormone dysfunction, impaired fertility, diabetes and impaired thyroid function.

In addition, to bring odor neutralizers and artificial fragrances, commercial tampons and pads use a chemical soup, laced with artificial colors, polyester, adhesives, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene and propylene glycol (PEG), contaminants linked to hormone disruption, cancer, birth defects, dryness, and infertility.

The other risks that prolonged use of sanitary napkins or tampons use can cause are Toxic Shock Syndrome: Toxic shock syndrome is not caused by the chemicals discussed above, but rather from an overgrowth of staphylococcus aureus bacteria in the vagina which causes a release of toxins and poisonous substances into the bloodstream. These toxins can cause a sudden fall in blood pressure, diarrhoea, vomiting, sunburn-like rash, dizziness, cold, and fever.

The problem with these commercial pads is that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t make feminine hygiene companies list their products’ ingredients. So consumers remain in dark about the use of chemicals in the pads and about their threat. A natural phenomena that exists to create is actually damaging the very reproductive system and impacting overall health of the women.

So what can be done? One of the best solutions to maintain the safety of women at home is to go back to olden days with some refinement. The use of a piece of good cloth, organic cotton and stitch the pads at home. This can be reused for 5 to 6 times after good wash or one can choose to buy readymade handmade cotton sanitary pads from stores. VegaLyfe.com in its endeavour to bring the healthy lifestyle for its users promotes the cotton handmade sanitary pads by eco femme.

    Rice Flour (Gluten Free)

  • Cut the dough into four pieces, then carefully press a portion out flat with your fingertips and start to roll it out using a pasta machine.
  • Start at the widest setting and roll the dough through it, lightly dusting with the rice flour if it sticks. Remember Gluten-free pasta isn’t as elastic as standard pasta, so make sure you avoid using the two narrowest settings, otherwise it may rip.
  • Once you have a thin sheet of pasta (about 2mm thick), set aside on a flour-dusted surface and cover with a damp tea towel to avoid it drying out.
  • Now’s the time gain to use your pasta machine to transform your dough into whichever variety of pasta you like. If you want to make tagliatelle, roll the pasta through the tagliatelle setting on your pasta machine, or use a sharp knife to slice the pasta sheets lengthways into long strips (roughly 7mm thick), placing on a flour-dusted tray as you go.

italian-

  • To cook, place in a pan of boiling salted water for around 3 minutes, or until done. When done, drain, cover the Pasta with moist cloth (to avoid sticking together) and set aside.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (204 C) and then pour some olive oil and once the oil heats, put the halved tomatoes and salt.  Bake the tomatoes for 10-15 minutes.
  • Now it’s time to prepare the sauce. In a large skillet over medium-low heat, add 1 Tbsp (15 ml) olive oil and the garlic and chopped onion. Add a pinch of salt and black pepper and stir frequently, cooking for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  • Then stir in 2 tablespoon rice flour (or other thickener of choice) and mix with a whisk. Once combined, slowly whisk in the almond milk a little at a time so clumps don’t form. Add another healthy pinch of salt and black pepper, bring to a simmer and continue cooking for another 4-5 minutes to thicken. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  • Once the sauce turns to your desired thickness add boiled pasta and baked tomatoes and stir.
  • Serve immediately and garnish with extra black pepper and fresh basil.

Nature’s Defense System to Fight Dengue

buy_essential_oil_online_vegaLyfe

In the case of Dengue Fever, prevention is definitely better than cure. Where there is no known vaccine or medicine yet to combat it, there is a preventive measure available in nature in the form of essential oils.

These essential oils have a similar function to plants, as blood to humans. They carry the vital nutrients and form the necessary defense mechanism to protect plants against infections. In ancient times essential oils were valued in gold for their therapeutic benefits. Here are the secret methods to use a few different essences of plants for Dengue prevention and protection.

Lemongrass and Lavender Essential Oils:

Lemongrass and Lavender essential oils are nature’s form of a natural mosquito repellent. You can apply these diluted essential oils on the exposed areas of skin, as well as diffuse them in your living space. This will keep the mosquitoes at bay and clean the air you breathe in. These oils being natural repellents don’t form deposits in your body, and any excess is always removed from your body. If you are planning longer periods of stay in a mosquito infested area, frequent re-application of Lemongrass and Lavender essential oils will be very useful. Also, since Dengue can cause skin rashes, applying Lavender essential oil to the rash areas will reduce the itch and sooth the skin from the irritation facilitating faster healing.

Peppermint & Thieves Essential Oils Helps to Fight Dengue Virus

Therapeutic grade essential oils like Thieves Oil, Oregano essential oil, and Peppermint essential oil have been used to fight Dengue virus since old times. According to the studies of National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) USA, peppermint essential oil is proved to be efficient larvicide and repellent against dengue vector. Peppermint essential oil can be diffused in the living space to kill mosquito larvae and it also has the ability to control the high fever and ease headache associated with dengue. It should be applied on the soles of feet to combat the fever, on temples for headaches.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and foot reflexology specifies that all the body organs are represented in our feet. Oil molecules applied to the soles reach the organs that require them and balance the rest “without any side effects”.

Thieves Essential Oil is a hot blend consisting of five different essential oils that are effective against most viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms. Thieves blend contains Lemon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Cinnamon and Clove essential oils. Being very spicy and hot, Thieves should be applied only to the thick areas of the skin, mainly under the soles of our feet.

Wonders of Peanut Butter – It is just so Delicious and Healthier than Dairy Butter?

buy_pure_peanut_butter_VegaLyfe

Delicious Pure Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is just not only a world-class delicacy but also far healthier than conventional dairy butter, especially in today’s fast lifestyle where all of us is either suffering or at risk of health issues like overweight, cholesterol, hypertension etc.

A dairy butter is made from cattle milk, primarily of cow & buffalo. It comprises of butterfat, milk proteins and water. On the other hand, Peanut butter is made from roasted ground peanuts. While Peanut butter comes in smooth and crunchy forms and stays so at room temperature, the dairy butter remains solid when refrigerated but spreads at room temperature and melts at 32 to 35 degree Celsius. Therefore, the peanut butter is more stable option at varying temperatures.

When comparing the health benefits, peanut butter is way ahead of dairy butter, especially for adults. For example 100 gm of dairy butter comes with a higher fat content when compared to peanut butter. When 81 gm of fat is seen in a 100 gm of dairy butter, it is only 50 gm in peanut butter. Comparing the protein level, dairy butter comes with just one gm of protein while peanut butter has 25 gm of protein content. Apart from these here are some other super advantages of Peanut butter.

1. Peanut butter is packed with nutrition

A serving of peanut butter has 3 mg of the powerful antioxidant vitamin E, 49 mg of bone-building magnesium, 208 mg of muscle-friendly potassium, and 0.17 mg of immunity-boosting vitamin B6. Research shows that eating peanuts can decrease your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic health conditions. One study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that consuming 1 ounce of nuts or peanut butter (about 2 tablespoons) at least 5 days a week can lower the risk of developing diabetes by almost 30%.

2. Peanut butter helps you lose weight

Calling peanut butter a diet food, with 180 to 210 calories per serving, may seem counter-intuitive. But it has the enviable combination of fiber (2 g per serving) and protein (8 g per serving) that fills you up and keeps you feeling full longer, so you eat less overall. Plus, there is nothing more indulgent than tasting peanut butter off a spoon

3. Peanut butter got the good fat

Peanut butter is full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fat. A recent study found that insulin-resistant adults who ate a diet high in monos had less belly fat than people who ate more carbohydrates or saturated fat.

4. Peanut butter helps you to prepare a tasty kiddy Lunch

The taste of peanut butter is irresistible, especially for kids. Hence it makes a tasty lunch option that both kids and adults cannot resist. Also peanut butter sandwich is fast lunch preparation option in the morning, as nothing can beat the spreadability of smooth peanut butter that doesn’t solidify in fridge due to the absence of bad fat. With just a couple of swipes of a knife, you get an even layer of peanut butter on your sandwich.

 Warnings for Peanut Butters

  1. It’s a little too tasty: There’s something about the combination of fat, salt, protein, and smooth scoop ability of peanut butter that promotes overeating. Since too much of anything is bad, same goes for Peanut butter too.
  2. If you are allergic to peanuts: make sure you are not allergic to peanuts, before trying it for the first time.

Indulge in the nutty pleasure and stay guilt free! 🙂

Is it Worthy to Select “Organic” Food?

“Organic grocery is not just pricey modern day fad; there is a deeper reason – why the world is moving towards organic food.”

why-organic-food

On one hand, you find grocery stores and online stores full of bulk rice, grains, cereals,
pulses that are grown in the modern day ways and seem to be normally priced. On some selected stores you will find CERTIFIED organic food. Both kinds of food look same except for the labeling; both provide vitamins, fiber, sodium, iron etc.

Then why should you spend extra on certified organic food? or should we ask Why is the chemical laden or the so called normal food so cheap vs the organic? Well, the answer is – Nonorganic is just Cheap!

Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and to grow natural and healthy food. Farmers who grow organic food do not use hazardous chemical fertilizer or pesticides instead they use natural fertilizers such as herbs, natural compost, organic waste to feed the soil, plants and use crop rotation to manage weeds. This is the most conventional and traditional practice that we knew as humans. Not modern at all!

On the other hand, modern day farming involves heavy use of genetically modified seeds, chemical fertilizers and the spray of poisonous pesticides. These pesticides residue is found on the peel as well as inside the food and since India has no regulatory body to check pesticide residue on food (unlike in western countries) the amount of poison that goes inside the body is unknown and not monitored/controlled at all.

According to the studies of International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the specialized cancer agency of WHO (World Health Organization), the potential health effects of hazardous chemicals of pesticides has been classified as carcinogenic (can cause cancer), neurotoxic (can cause damage to the brain), or teratogenic (can cause damage to a fetus). This process of classification called “hazard identification,” is the first step of “risk assessment”.  Source:   http://www.who.int/features/qa/87/en/

That is why, how your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their non-organically grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.

  • Organic produce does not contain pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in modern agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.
  • Organic food is often fresher, the shelf life of real organic food is less as it doesn’t contain preservatives or chemicals. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced and harvested fresh on smaller farms near where it is sold.
  • Organic farming is better for the environment. Organic farming practices reduce pollution, conserve water, reduce soil erosion, increase soil fertility, and use less energy. Farming without pesticides is also better for nearby birds and animals as well as people who live close to farms
  • Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide.

Raw Cacao Nibs at VegaLyfe’s Chocolate Store

Cacao nibs are simply chocolate in its purest form before anything else is added. They are dried and fermented bits of cacao beans. The texture of raw organic cacao nibs is similar to that of roasted coffee beans. They have a deep chocolate flavour that can be described as slightly nutty, bitter and delicious. If you’re already a chocolate lover, chances are you’ll be into nibs.

Cacao nibs are one of the favorite little extras people across the globe use to make bakery items tasty and nutritious. In day to day life, cacao nibs are mashed at home and used to make that super special morning shake with the favorite choice of nut milk along with seasonal fruits.

Cacao nibs are one of the few foods that help in rapid red blood cell production, destroy bad cholesterol in the body, act as a mood enhancer & can make us feel happy, enhance our body’s muscles and nerve functioning. If this was not enough, read on to know how good these are for you.

Help You Lose Weight and Keep You Regular

Yes, you can lose weight when eating cacao nibs! Eating pure cacao nibs gives a lot of fiber in your body that makes you feel fuller. However, don’t confuse this with chocolate bars found at the grocery store because you don’t get any dietary fiber when you eat a chocolate bar, but one ounce of cacao nibs has nine grams of fiber! That makes cacao nibs ultimate high-fiber foods. In addition, the fiber found in cacao helps keep your bowel movements regular and acts as a good natural medicine for constipation relief.

Great Source of Antioxidants

Raw cacao nibs are a great source of antioxidants in the body that help the body’s cells resist damage caused by free radicals (formed by normal bodily processes, such as breathing, and from environmental contaminants, like cigarette smoke). If your body does not have enough antioxidants to combat the amount of oxidation that occurs, the free radicals can cause some damage. For example, an increase in oxidation can cause low-density lipoprotein (LDL), also known as “bad” cholesterol, to form plaque on the artery walls.

Prevent Anemia

Raw Cacao nibs are a great source of Iron, which is necessary for red blood cell production. An ounce of the raw nibs has six per cent of your recommended daily iron intake.

Cardiovascular Health & Blood Pressure

Raw cacao nibs contain flavanols that have potential influences on vascular health, such as lowering blood pressure, improving blood flow to the brain and heart, and making blood platelets less sticky and able to clot.

Rich source of Magnesium

Cacao nibs are one of the best dietary sources of magnesium — a mineral needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in our bodies — with 272 milligrams per 100 grams. It’s important for muscle and nerve function and keeps the heart rhythm steady.

Mood Improver

Neurotransmitters are the messengers in our brains that tell our bodies how to act, and that includes mood. Cacao’s ability to act on those neurotransmitters is why it’s known for its mood-enhancing skills. Chocolate and cacao stimulate the brain to release particular neurotransmitters that can trigger emotions including good ones like euphoria.

Get your pack now in the raw form, beans or a chocolate bar. It tastes yummier than all the health benefits that you just read. Binge and Stay Happy!

Traditionally rotis & bread contain gluten since they come from wheat, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy these foods in your diet.  Instead, switch to gluten-free alternatives of your favorite foods. Health food stores such as VegaLyfe.com offers an extended range of gluten free flours that can be used to make gluten-free bread and rotis, parathas and puris.

  1. Enjoy naturally gluten-free grains and cereals.

The gluten-free diet doesn’t mean that all grains and cereals have to be stopped. There are many tasty and nutritious cereals that are naturally gluten free like – quinoa, teff, amaranth, buckwheat, corn and millet. Just check the labels to make sure you are using uncontaminated versions. Try swapping traditional breadcrumbs for polenta crumbs, opt for gluten-free noodles & pasta made of buckwheat or rice and try baking with quinoa for gluten-free alternatives. preview

Are you Carrying a Memento of Horrific Death?

buy-non-leather-ladies-bag-Delhi

How much you adore that favourite pair of kolapuri juttis, your premium expensive handbag, the soft leather wallet or your favourite boots. You may not give it mush thought but in reality, all of these possessions are a memento of a horrific death of an innocent being. Don’t get surprised, you paid to get the leather product. Leather is nothing but processed skin of a soul that wanted to live as much as we want to. The  treatment of cattle and animals used for hide in Indian slaughterhouse is among the cruelest in the world. The slaughterhouses look for cheapest ways to end the life and get the skin. The cheaper the technique more cruel and painful it is. India is world’s largest exporter of leather, so possibly all premium fashion brands are using processed animal skin, peeled amidst pain and fear in Indian slaughterhouses.

According to the statistics from the Ministry of Food Processing Industries and the Council for Leather Exports, the value of leather exports from India (which is largest in the world) is 10 times greater than the value of it’s meat exports. That likely indicates that animals are mostly killed to make the profit from their skin.

Since it is illegal to kill healthy, young cattle in India, cattle are often deliberately maimed. Their legs are broken or poisoned so that they can be declared fit for slaughter. Cow, buffaloes and their calves are tied together with ropes that are run through their noses and are beaten mercilessly till they breath their last. The horror of Indian slaughterhouse can be understood from the comment of PETA Investigator:-

“While the cows were being loaded, I could hear the gurgling of one cow choking on her own blood. The rope in her nose had been improperly placed, and with the constant tugging on it by rough handlers, as well as being tethered to her fellow cattle during the 12-hour march, it had ripped through her nose, and blood was pouring down her face.”
– PETA India investigator”

Your compassionate self would not be able to bear the sight of such a cow. We are all born to be kind and cruelty is not pleasant for any of us. So don’t stay ignorant to the pain of death and physical horror of an animal. There is no reason why an innocent being should be killed for our clothing and fashion. Life is priceless. Extra bucks paid for that leather accessory do not justify the cruelty behind the scenes. In an attempt to bring premium non-leather shoes, bags, and accessories, VegaLyfe has launched a complete Vegan and cruelty-free fashion collection segment. It’s cruelty-free, stylish and good on your pocket. Shift and Shop now and do your bit!

That Glass of Cow’s Milk that your Child must drink

buy_milk_online_in_VegaLyfe

Is it the time to shift to alternate milk?

Cow’s milk has always been considered to be an essential inclusion in human diet, especially for kids. Milk is believed to contain all kind of necessary nutrition that a body needs for growth. And this belief is wrong.

Milk from a cow or buffalo contains 7 types of hormones naturally, these are meant for the fast-paced growth required for their offspring i.e. calves. Unfortunate as it will be, cattle across the globe are injected with Bovine Growth Hormone so they mature fast and give milk soon. Not to forget the oxytocin hormone which is illegal, but administered to get more milk. Though this is a banned drug, still the hormone injections are getting smuggled to the dairy farms / tabelas. The oxytocin in your milk not only causes early puberty but also is one of the reasons for prostrate and breast cancer.

Too boost milk production further, cows that are milked are always kept pregnant. Milk from pregnant cows contains about 33 times as much estrogen as milk from non-pregnant cows. An increased exposure to estrogen increases the risk of cancer, and dairy accounts for 60 % to 80 % of estrogens consumed by humans today.

In 2006, Harvard researchers have found out, by studying 100,000 women aged 26 to 46, those who had the highest intake of meat and dairy products also had the highest risk of breast cancer (33% more than those who consumed the least). For men, over 20 studies have established a strong link between prostate cancer and milk consumption.

Now add to this the 2001 Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) research according to which 68% milk sold in Indian market was found adulterated. The most common adulterants found in milk are unhygienic water (off course food fraudulent won’t use mineral water), detergent, caustic soda, glucose, white paint and refined oil, a practice considered “very hazardous” and which can cause serious ailments.

So what can be done if you love milk? And you love to have milk in a cup of tea or coffee? Plant based sources are great alternatives. There are several varieties of nut milks (almond, cashew, walnut etc), seed milks (sesame seed milk, flax seed milk, hemp milk etc) that one can easily make at home or can buy off the shelves. The most popular ones easily available these days are Soy milk and Almond Milk. These milks are healthy, rich, free from additional hormones and also cruelty free.

Almond milk, is a plant milk with a creamy texture and nutty taste. It is great source of vitamins A and D. Since almond milk is made from ground almonds, it is lower in calories than other milks as long as it is unsweetened. It is also free from cholesterol, saturated fat, and is naturally lactose free. Commercial almond milk comes in sweetened, unsweetened, plain, vanilla and chocolate flavours. It can also be made at home using a blender, almonds, and water.

Soya milk too is a great alternative and a good source of vitamin B. It contains 10% of our recommended daily intake of folic acid, a B-complex vitamin.  Soy milk has proven effective in lowering cholesterol and lowering body fat.

Virgin Coconut Oil: A good ingredient to Cheat With

buy_virgin_coconut_cooking_oil_India

When choosing your cooking oils don’t just check if the oil is safe and nutritious in its unprocessed state, but also check how it turns after it is heated in high temperature. Since deep frying is an integrated part of Indian culinary, your highly priced refined oil may turn your poories or parathans, highly unhealthy.

Scientists found that heating up vegetable oils led to the release of high concentrations of chemicals called aldehydes, which have been linked to illnesses including cancer, heart disease and dementia. In contrast, heating up olive oil in tests produced much lower levels of aldehydes. However, coconut oil produced the lowest levels of the harmful chemicals.

Very few people know that coconut oil has recently been dubbed the “world’s healthiest oil.” Claims abound about its near-miraculous healing powers. It’s reported to dissolve kidney stones, lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, boost immune function, promote weight loss, protect against certain cancers and a whole lot more.

Coconut oil is made from the dried fruit of the coconut palm tree, contains 86% saturated fat. But coconut oil isn’t as bad as its high saturated fat content might make you think. Studies suggest that diets using coconut oil do raise total blood cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, but not nearly to the same extent as butter. Coconut oil also seems to raise HDL (good) cholesterol. (Unlike LDL cholesterol, the HDL version doesn’t build up on artery walls.) In one small study, taking 2 tablespoons of coconut oil daily for one week did not significantly raise bad cholesterol but did increase good cholesterol. Plus it comes from a plant, it may contain beneficial phytochemicals yet to be discovered.

So, if your recipe absolutely requires using an oil and you do not mind the guilt, then Virgin Coconut oil may be the best option to use. 🙂
